I am approached on a daily basis by people who have held on to some of the most obscure myths about SEO and PPC. Today I am going to address some of these myths so that you wont be fooled by these urban legends.
1) The Meta keywords tag is a very important ranking factor – As far as Google is concerned it does not use the meta keyword tag in search. Here is the article by Matt Cutts – Keywords Meta Tag In Web Search
2) Links are the only thing that matters in SEO – While links are a factor it is not the only one. There are many factors that a good marketer abides by. Here is an article by SEOMoz on Ranking Factors – Search Ranking Factors
3) SEO can be solved by using software programs – You can not in any way automate the entire process of SEO. Search engines change on a daily basis which means that a complete automation tool would also have to change to fit the changes that the search engines have made. Also automation always looks like AUTOMATION. You can tell an automated comment on a blog and 90% of the time filter it out. Here is a good article on Bruce Clay about this subject – You Cant Automate SEO
4) SEO is just good development – There is nothing further than the truth on this situation, SEO is a mixture of development, design, research, competitive analysis and a whole slew of classic marketing strategies.
I am only gonna address these 4 myths that I hate. For a complete list of SEO myths here is a really good one – Top 25 SEO Myths

Thanks for sharing. Search engine optimization is indeed one of the most crucial areas in Internet marketing, it is a perfect bridge between technology and business….
Agree w/ all the points above, well said Joe.
You have an awesome blog going man, keep the advice and thoughts coming!
Meta KW tag might be considered by Yahoo, and/or the smaller (micro-sized) search engines, or they might not be, we don’t know anymore
Thanks for the comment Arsham and thanks for the compliment. I work very hard to keep this blog going and it makes it all worth it when I get comments like this. Hey make sure to check back in today, I have a killer article coming out a little later on
No problem man, you more than deserve it.. the email notifications are set up, looking forward to future posts.

Well done OnTheRoad, keep up the good work. It can sometimes be annoying that everything has to be done manually, but that’s the only way you can be sure that you’re in full control. Also, it make take longer, but the upside is that your risk of getting banned or penalized is much less — AND IF YOU DO experience this.. with using a program, you won’t know where the problem occurred, whereas if you do everything manually, you can more easily pinpoint the problem so that you don’t repeat it in the future.
Good stuff everyone, best wishes for this holiday season to you and your families
!!
Good read! I think everyone can go on forever and debate myths. I personally tested out the Keywords Tag when that was said. I still have a few pages out there ranked based on the Keywords Tag and the Title and Description have nothing to do with it. I still like to do everything manually.
Unfortunately people today are lazy and want to do everything with a program, they then wonder why there sites are so screwed up and why they are not ranking well for anything in the SERPS.
I would hope you do everything manually, I don’t take you for being a slacker ontheroad. You are very wise and I don’t think you make bad decisions such as trying to let programs do your job for you.
BTW, as I see, you don’t use keywords. Why?
There are actually a couple of reasons why I don’t use keywords. The biggest one In My Opinion though is that they are pretty much useless.
Thanks for dropping by.

Number 3 irks me the most. I have worked with way to many design companies that other SEO and when you get to the core of their methods, they are using a piece of software (normally not a good software choice at that).
Software is great for providing guidance, especially to someone new to search engine optimization, but you just can’t beat a human trained eye.
Thanks for sharing,
Karl
And that’s why it’s on my list of SEO myth’s that Irk me the most
I lost clients to software only to have them come back a month or 2 later asking to sign back on.
Don’t let it bother you though, the one thing a software program can never take from you is your talent and natural human instinct/common sense.
Cheers
I want to address the issue of link building in the SEO overall economy.
I do believe that having in place a good back link portfolio makes The difference in your ranking. Of course on page optimization is important but is in the same time severely diminished in importance due to its unilateral nature.
I saw in the article on SEOmoz you referenced that on the first spot is Trust/Authority. The way I see it, trust and authority is directly related and reflected on the frequency at which a site is referenced (linked to) across its niche.
Basically the first two position are occupied by the same criteria – back links – whether we’re talking about the overall number of links of a domain or link number to individual pages.
Very good points Cristian. You are absolutely right and I agree with you 100%, trust and authority are related to the frequency that a site is referenced. Also included in the equation is the sites that are linking to you (are they authoritative sites) and how many sites are linking to you.
You seem to be very knowledgeable, please keep coming back so that some of my newer readers can gain knowledge from you.
