To Report Black Hat or Not To Report Black Hat? Thats The Question

I have recently been asked a question by a local webmaster. The question was “should I report black hat tactics to Google?” I gave him some advice but unfortunately the answer to that question is a little more difficult than a simple Yes or No.

In a lot of ways no one is perfect. The same way you report him to Google for using a black hat tactic is the same way that competitor can report you to Google for a tactic that you are using that you might not know is black hat(no, this person was not a client). I believe strongly in the saying do unto others as you would have them do unto you. But at the same time I believe in aggressively pursuing a competitive edge. This question is truly a tough one and as like everything else it will vary from person to person.

Fortunately I have never been faced with the problem of having to make the call of whether to report a webmaster or not. But I would have a lot of thinking to do if I was ever faced with it. I would never want to take food(money) out of someone else’s mouth just as I wouldn’t want someone to take food out of my mouth. But on the flip side wrong is wrong and people should be punished accordingly.

hmmm I hope I can avoid that decision forever :)

What are your opinions? What would you do in that situation?
