One of the biggest high points in my business came when I released my first “SUCCESSFUL” press release. It took much trial and error but after we got it right the press release paid for itself 20x over again. I am now gonna share my experience (the good and the bad) with you guys.

It all started when I decided to release a press release about our business on PRweb.com. The press release was intended to let people know that we were running free SEO evaluations for any potential clients wanting to sign on with Graphic SEO. The first time around our press release completely bombed out. Looking back on what we did, I kick myself now. Here were some of the things that we did wrong:

Our title tag did not include any keywords.
Our links were not optimized at all.
Our press release did not have any call to action words.
Our press release contained very little targeted keywords.
Our press release had no picture.

After failing miserably with our first press release I decided to take another crack at it. After performing extensive research we evaluated what we had done wrong and decided to change our whole perspective on how to write a successful press release.

When we wrote our press release some of the key factors that we focused on were the following:

We optimized our title tags accordingly. Here is the title tag:
Graphic SEO Launches a Free SEO Website Evaluation For Website Owners
With adding the right keywords to the title tag such as SEO, Website Owners, Website Evaluation we ranked in the top 10 of Google for such keywords as SEO, Website, Website Owners and many other important keywords.

After optimizing the title tags, we then focused on writing the content for the press release. One of the main things we focused on were the keywords that we had researched. We also focused on placing call to action words within the press release itself.

Once this task was finished we then looked at which links we wanted to place inside the press release so that our own site would benefit from it.

Finally we placed a clean picture inside the press release. This may not seem like a big thing but in actuality this means a lot. Remember when the press release hits Google news, the picture that you include in it is placed next to the release.

When we finished following these simple steps our press release was ready for distribution. What we didn’t realize was the impact that following these steps was gonna have on our site. Within 28 days we had topped 100,000 impressions on our release and gained enough clients so that the press release had paid for itself 20x over again.

Here are the numbers:

Again lets recap on some of the things that we have done in order to achieve success with our press release.

1) Optimize The Title Tags – This is one of the most important things when releasing a press release. It is the first thing that people see and it is the biggest ranking factor with the search engines.

2) Optimizing The Body Text – If the title tag is queen then the body text is the queen. Make sure to place relevant keywords and call to action words in the body text.

3) Including A Picture In The Press Release – A picture speaks a thousand words and including a picture in your press release is a very important step. Make sure to include a picture that is both relevant and captivating. When looking at your picture make sure that it stands out, it should be a picture that catches the eye.

4) Anchor Text – Make sure to include anchor text in your press release. This will give your the double benefit of a good press release and some link juice to your site :) .

I hope that this helps everyone out. Following these steps have not only helped us out on the example shown but on every subsequent press release that we have come out with afterwards.

Any comments on this would be greatly appreciated. Please feel free to share your experiences with releasing press releases.

  8. I don’t see how optimizing the PR can directly bring you more “reprints”? Did you submit it to the same places? Where did the traffic come from exactly? places that used your PR, or did it just score higher on Google for some term?
