Google TrustRank Killing New Websites

As of last week Google brought back an old patent that they had abandoned about 2 years ago. You can read all about this on SEO By The Sea. Up until then our blog was ranking extremely well on Google considering that it was a brand new blog. We were receiving around 20 hits a day off of different keywords with about 5 posts written.

So everything was going very well up until October 20th. Thats when Google traffic came to a complete halt. It didn’t drop from20 to like 10 hits a day, it dropped from 20 to 0 hits a day. For the last 7 days Google hasn’t sent 1 visitor our way (Good thing we had other forms of advertising).

So the first thing I checked out was if we had gotten penalized. But fortunately we hadn’t. All of our pages are still in the Google index and we haven’t done anything at all to get ourselves penalized. The only thing we have done thus far was write articles. Every link pointing to our site is 100% natural.

The only conclusion that we could draw from this was that Google is now applying trustrank filtering in some way shape or form. Could it be that we are getting filtered for being new? I doubt that we were sand boxed, being as though we were already in the index and ranking very well.

One note that I made about the situation is that I noticed a lot of my clients sites, particularly the older ones, ranking very well. So to me the age factor has a big roll to play in this new algorithmic change. I believe that it is being given a higher place on the ranking totem poll than it was given before.

I also noticed that client sites with lower pagerank had a lot less pages in the index than they previously had before last week. For example, one client in particular had around 48,000 pages in the index, as of last week he dropped all the way down to 23,000 pages almost instantaneously.  That is just one example of about 5 client sites that dropped eiher that night or the day after. Coincidence, I think not.

Has anyone else noticed these changes? If so please feel free to comment on your experience.

But all in all, I always realized that Google, while being a good source of traffic is a very unstable source of traffic. I am just glad that I am flexible and do not totally rely on them for all of my traffic nor my clients traffic.
