External Linking Strategy Guide (Illustrated)

External Linking Strategy Guide Illustrated links seo External Linking Strategy Guide (Illustrated)

The other day I came out with an internal linking strategy guide. So to top it off I decided to give you guys a couple of tips on how I try to get links in to my pages externally and which pages I link to from other sites. Here is a brief illustration built on top of the internal link illustration:

Well let me explain what this illustration means and also give you a couple of pointers along the way:

external link strategy

Read below for in depth details on this

1) Of course the most important page in anyones mind is the home page. So naturally people try all different techniques to build links into their homepages. This becomes a major problem for most people, there are a lot of shortcomings for people who try to concentrate all of their energy with building links into their homepage

(Shortcomings)

a) It looks very unnatural to have 50,000 links into your homepage and 5 going into your subpages. Google does not like unnatural and hence this can get you penalized or banned.

b) Your homepage may be important but their are other pages on your site that are just as equally important.

c) It is a lot harder to get people to NATURALLY link to your homepage than other pages ie. a good linkbait article.

Well that should be enough to have you looking for other pages to link to, if not then you know it all and you should read no further.

2) A good place to build a couple of links to are you sitemap.html page. This is an awesome page to get links into because it links to every other page on your site, hence Google will crawl these links and find them other pages.

3) Target links into category pages, this is a great place for Google to crawl to find products/articles.

4) One rule of thumb that I have especially when working on e commerce sites is to try to build links into at least every other product page (unless there is 1 million products). When using the related product tool that I was talking about in my last post “Internal Linking Strategy Guide” this works like a charm. It will have every product indexed very quickly, in return gaining your site a lot more visibility.

Well that all for this guide, if you guys have any suggestions please feel free to leave them in the comments area. Have a good week at work everyone :P

  3. I keep changing my external link strategy. Or rather, I don’t actually have a defined strategy. Worked for me so far ;)

    • First and foremost it is good to hear from you again Anne.

Secondly you should definitely try to build some kind of linking strategy. The best thing to do is find what works for you write it down and keep doing that as you go along. After a while you will notice that you have 100 killer items on the list so that the next website that you take on will be a cinch to market for.

Good advice overall, though I disagree a bit on #4. Link building to product pages should concentrate just on those products that will be offered long-term. There’s nothing worse than thinking, “I’ve finally found that great _____ I’ve been looking for…” only to find that page 404. I tell my clients that “product” linking should focus on categories and sub-categories to ensure a greater return on link building efforts. The exceptions being blogs and other links that are clearly dated where the shop owner can say, “I added this today, get it while it lasts.”

  6. great tip about linking to the sitemap page… i hadnt thought of that one!

whats your take on sitemap pages containing 1000s of links? i know google used to limit its crawl to the first 100 links but believe its gone beyond this now, but a sitemap page containing nothing but links and no text content cant be a good thing.

I thought you would need to know that this website isn’t showing up right on my iphone. Cool site though!

I don't have a specific strategy which I know I must invest time, first things first hopefully not too late (goes for my personal site). By the way, I never though about linking to my site map, great idea thanks.

    Interesting point you've got here.
Never thought of using the sitemap page for linking externally. However, from a user point of view I don't believe people would like that. That's to land on the sitemap page of a website out of no where. But it would definitely be great for a crawler.
