I decided to write a post today on how to successfully market your e commerce site. Most of the sites that Graphic SEO markets for are e commerce and we find that marketing for an e commerce site is a whole lot different, than say, marketing for this blog. With blogs and news sites you are focusing on traffic while with e commerce sites you are mainly focusing on traffic that converts to customers. This aspect makes marketing for e commerce a lot harder than marketing for ad driven sites.

With that in mind lets jump into a couple of tricks that I learned about marketing for e commerce site.

1) Default Product Descriptions – A lot of the sites that I have worked with in the past have had the default product descriptions in place for every single item on their site. This is a big NO NO when it comes to SEO. The first thing you wanna do with any e commerce site is change the default product descriptions. Even if you just re word them it’s better than not changing them at all. If you have a large site with 100,000+ products then it would be best to start with your most profitable products first and work your way down to the least profitable products.

2) Good Internal Site Structure – This is a very simple way to get indexed a lot better, unfortunately it is the most overlooked part of most e commerce sites. When making up your internal site structure make sure that a potential customer can reach a product within 2-3 clicks from the home page. Also make sure to disallow search spiders from indexing your unimportant pages such as the return policy page and the shopping cart page.

3) Make Bookmarking Easy – A good example of this is a site called Christian Bookstore (Dot) Net, as you can see in their upper right hand corner they have an awesome non intrusive but yet still prevalent way to bookmark their pages. This is a great example on how to get people to bookmark your site.

4) Tracking Keywords – To many times I have seen e commerce sites set up with Google analytics but they have not enabled e commerce tracking. If you dont know how to set up e commerce tracking here is a great tutorial on it

5) Dominate On Keywords That Convert – A good rule of thumb for any ecommerce site is to open u an Adwords account. After opening up your Adwords account look at what words are converting into sales in Google analytics and dominate on those keywords in Adwords. For example if the keyword “wordpress widgets” where converting at 11% for me in the organic search and I rank in 8th place on the first page, a good idea would to also shoot for that word in Google Adwords so that I can increase my chances of a click through by doubling how many time I show up on the first page. Do not do this with low converting keywords, only do it with keywords that convert at 5% or better unless you are making a ton of profit off of said keyword.

6)Use Alt Tags in Your Images – To many times I see e commerce owners overlook this very easy procedure. Please make sure to use image ALT tags, you can even do it dynamically by just pulling the product description into the ALT tag.

7)Make Sure To Use Prevalent Buy Now Buttons – One of the main factors of on page marketing is to make the Buy Now buttons as visible as possible. Check out these examples of Good and Bad buy now buttons. Clearly you can see the difference in the 2 sites. While the good Buy Now button is clearly prevalent on the DeeperShopping Site the Enokiworld sites button is completely hidden (if you couldn’t find it, it’s that hand holding money sign in the bottom right hand corner of the page :) ).

8) Stay In Touch With Your Customers – For heavens sake, if you have an email list then use it. I have come across countless webmasters who had perfectly good email lists with hundreds and sometimes even thousands of contacts and they did not use their email lists for squat. Keep in touch with your customers, tell them about new promotions you are running and sales that are taking place. Trust me they want to hear about this stuff.

Also a good rule of thumb is to keep in touch with them at least once every 2 weeks of so.

    Some good basic advice but these are more SEO based and dont just apply to ecommerce specific websites, this applies to most websites. You also need to consider things like clear logical usebility and strong calls to action when talking about ecommerce.

    I would also add to these: make sure you have very clear contact details (a phone number), a returns policy, and if possible a location that people can come to visit you.

  9. the biggest tip i have for ecommerce is sort your deadf product pages out. whether you drop them back to the parent category, or show them related products (based on keywords?) just make sure they never see the 404 page, you can always 301 to make sure juice is kept. oh and dont forget that if you reinstate the product that the engine should conflict!
